5 Tips To Make The Most Out Of Your Storage Unit

Ideal Mini Storage units don't have to be a space you visit a few times a year, where you did through box after box looking for one thing. They can be organized and easily accessible spaces that act as an extension to the space in your home or office. We have come up with (what we think are) the most important tricks to keep in mind when packing your unit.

  1. Get a Game Plan!
    • The layout of your storage unit is, in our opinion, the most important aspect in getting organized. Plan out where you will put your things before you start filling your space.
    • Remember to stack the heavy boxes on the bottom and the lighter ones on top. If you plan to access your unit frequently, create an aisle down the center of your unit to make everything more accessible.
    • Disassemble your big items like tables, bed frames, and entertainment centers. They're bulky! Wrap them up and label them. To avoid losing screws, we suggest putting them in a small bag and taping them to the wrapped items they belong to.
  2. Manage Your Boxes
    • When managing your boxes, the first thing you should keep in mind is that the storage units (even waterproof ones like ours) can gather moisture. We suggest keeping your boxes off of the floor to prevent them from being damaged. You can use 2x4's, pallets, or plywood...anything that will keep your items off of the floor of you unit.
    • Label your boxes on all sides for quick reference - who likes opening a box after box to find something?
    • It is tempting to fill a box to the top, but remember not to make the box too heavy. Just because there is still space inside doesn't mean it is full. Make sure you are still comfortably able to lift the box.
  3. Organize Your Electronics
    • Many home electronics have several cords. We suggest color-coding all of your cords with colored stickers. Place small colored stickers on the cords and the same colored sticker where the cord goes. This will help you out when it comes to reassembly.
  4. Keep The Rust Away
    • It's amazing what a small amount of machine oil can do to combat rust. Rub a small amount of metal tools, bicycles, and other equipment before you store them.
  5. Consider Insurance
    • If your belongings are worth storing, they are worth insuring. Most often your homeowners or renters insurance will cover your valuables. Be sure to check with your insurance company.
